comment Why does ArcGIS “forget” my specified default GDB for a map document (mxd)?
I am running tools inside of ArcMap, both from the toolbox and the Python window. The workspaces are not set to the wrong values, its just every so often it just stops respecting the workspace and then starts outputting to the default location (in documents/ArcGis/default.gdb). I've found that reseting the workspace variables via the Python window seems to fix this.

comment How do I calculate a weighted centroid with respect to a raster, e.g. population weighted centroid
I see - I'm actually using a raster that tries to do exactly what you mentioned - distribute the population precisely over the entire area. GPW, GRUMP, UNEP, LandScan are examples of this. Since I do have the actual (or predicted rather) population at some resolution, I don't use the density. Now, assuming I did what you did, where there is only one value of the polygon, doesn't that result in simply the centroid being the typical geometric center? Final twist, if I get a weighted centroid that's outside of its associated polygon, does this entail data issues, or is this possible?

why use the density rather than actual counts?

thanks - I'm familiar with these settings - the issue I'm seeing is in spite of. See my edit above - hopefully it makes it clearer.

comment Is it possible to use Arcpy in ArcGIS 10 to zoom to a selected feature?
Most scripting functionality that handles document (mxd) management, display, or output is going to use the ArcPy mapping module. help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/…

has anyone actually used this to debug arc scripts though?
