I am a conservation biologist (with 15 years international experience) who is now working in the Spatial industry. One of my projects was awarded the GITA Australia and New Zealand Spatial Excellence award for 2013 and Highly Commended at QSEA. I have presented at several GIS and Disaster Management conferences in Australia since I moved in 2010.

I am focused on automating large processes using python along with ESRI/Mapinfo and open source GIS tools that complement the strengths of each other. I also work in Disaster Management and risk mitigation.

comment Does QGIS have the equivalent of ArcGIS's Layer (*.LYR) file?
This is great...I was looking for this a few months back.

comment What is GIS for Indigenous Peoples?
@PolyGeo -I agree, I will re-phrase it. I am stuck on 2 points, namely writing 2 more examples of how GIS can help in understanding the different elements of a community (in Landuse planning) and a few more relevant global examples of how spatial thinking helps to solve issues.

Thanks Aaron - the GIS in Plain english is good but doesn't exactly work for this audience. Nathan - I have already drafted it and just wanted comments. Sorry that it's off site but I'll change the question to ask ppl to comment here.

comment Output result of queries to dataset in Model Builder
Thanks, just thinking about it further, I will look at using forums.arcgis.com/threads/… and maybe outputting to a collect values tool.

comment Calculate polygon area inside extent
I tried this as I have the same question but it gives me percentages above 100 and also areas for a property that don't add up. I have tried a 10m tolerance. I am trying to see how much of each soil type there is in all properties in a project area.

comment Python syntax error -can't figure out why?
It seems to run -outputs 0 and Ok but hasn't completed yet. I will contact the author and see if they can help. It will be a very useful process.

-thank. I corrected the encoding by replacing the little block and the wierd " signs. Am just going through the indentation issues as well.

comment Python syntax error -can't figure out why?
Thanks, I see the same thing now when I open it in notepad ++. I don't understand why, it is just copy pasted from tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.1080/… (scroll to the end). I am trying to figure out how to convert it to ascii automatically.

comment Python syntax error -can't figure out why?
@ian It just say's Syntax Error - invalid syntax (DrivingDistance.py, line 7). Also in PyScripter it highlights the fromFile = section of the line and when you hover over it, it say Syntax Error: Invalid Syntax

comment Calculate length of line across zones with at least m accuracy
I created the points using GDA94 and not MGA. It is for pigeon racing from start point to the loft. We were just concerned by the different distances but if we use one method then the relative distances will be the same.

Google Earth gives 467.28 which is closest to the GDA94, Shape.length value.

comment Calculate length of line across zones with at least m accuracy
Thanks. I am now getting 465.360 which is much lower than the values in GDA94. It is a methodology and projection based issue - I want to figure out what the best system to use is.

comment Calculate length of line across zones with at least m accuracy
Thanks @PolyGeo -when the dataset is converted to 3577 (Australian Albers) and I now get 468.467, that's now a 2km difference between the GDA94 based calculations

comment Draw line between points from multiple datasets
We don't have business analyst. One issue is that the points are across the 54S and 55S boundary and I am using GDA94 but then arcgis won't Calculate Geometry of the line as it's Geographic. I looked at ET Geowizards but can't find an appropriate tool. The Mapinfo distance tool suggested does the same as the point distance tool.

thanks but the 2 tools are giving errors. See updated q. Do you know what I should do to fix this?

Mapinfo would be fine as well...

comment FME - set symbology in TAB files in a directory
Thanks, I tried this but no luck. It just doesn't write or overwrites the same file. I would like to just overwrite each file or if necersary create a new file with same directory structure as the input. I have included the output from the system.
