comment how to use mapproxy to serve WMS from reprojected google maps tiles
You will need to have tile url, namely the url to a single tile with x/y/x value like this pseudo one: tiles.googlemaps.com{x}/{y}/{z}.png (Use Firebug/Firefox to get the real one), and then you just need read thoroughly MapProxy's documentation to get your task done.

Yes, you can use TMS to cache Google Tiles and then publish them as WMS service, but that would violate Google's TOS, so you should make sure that you can have right for using Google Maps Tiles

comment Any low-cost Virtual Private Servers able to run GeoServer?
+1 for linode too. I have one project running on Linode currently, i deployed Django, Geoserver and Postgis on one VPS. So far so good.

comment How to implement feature search in OpenLayers with Geoserver?
@Iant: Thanks for your very useful notes, i have come back to your site but it seems to be dead. As i understand, your personal site at the university has been taken down as you leave to a new company. Could you please put the site up somewhere again ? I think the work you did is really good for the beginners. Really appreciate.
