comment Problem with matplotlib when installing QGIS on mac
could you uninstall matplotlib and reinstall using the methods outlined at kyngchaos? This works well for me on Mavericks. Is there any particular reason you need to do things differently?

comment How to obtain the value of a feature programatically, based on a coordinate
Good to know, thanks for the tip! The help file confirms that "geometry objects can be used instead of feature layers for both input and output to make geoprocessing simpler."

Note that the help file specifies that the select_features must be a featureLayer - in fact you've shown that this isn't necessary.

comment How to apply the four colors theorem in a polygon map in ArcGIS/ArcToolBox automatcally?
This is brilliant - thanks so much for sharing it. I noticed at ArcGIS 10.2 the field names on the PolygonNeighbors output table have changed slightly - the fields are now called src_OBJECT and nbr_OBJECT

I like this approach - it avoids steps 1 and 2 in my scenario. Thanks.

comment Issues Using Dropbox to Sync File GeoDatabases
FWIW I was editing a complex polygon layer in a file GDB so I disconnected Dropbox while I was working on it. I reconnected Dropbox after editing, so the files were backed up. 24 hours later, all my edits are gone, and (since I had disconnected dropbox during editing) there are no intermediate files to revert to. So it looks like Dropbox may sometimes corrupt a file geodatabase.

comment How to handle the New ESRI Ocean Basemap
@sfletche your cynicism seems a bit misplaced - the new basemap works well in the Esri APIs, which is what Esri have designed it for. If it's causing a problem in OpenLayers I guess they'd figure that's not their problem...

comment Why does the next() method fail after the last record, using arcpy.da.SearchCursor?
@nickves aha - that's exactly what I'm trying to detect too! The code block above does this - if there are zero results (or you have iterated through all results to the end of the cursor) calling cursor.next() throws the StopIteration error.

comment Why does the next() method fail after the last record, using arcpy.da.SearchCursor?
@JasonScheirer maybe - but I didn't find anything when searching on arcpy.da.SearchCursor and next. I'm not an expert Python programmer so I didn't know to look up Python Iterator Protocol, etc. At least now it's available if someone searches on those keywords

@nickves actually I don't think that's correct - the cursor doesn't have a length property

comment Why does the next() method fail after the last record, using arcpy.da.SearchCursor?
@JasonScheirer fair enough - it was a workaround for what I was trying to do, but I agree in most cases it's better to use the for loop. I've modified the answer
