comment Select vectors overlapping a raster
@whuber If I'm understanding you correctly, that will only allow me to get summary statistics of the values of attributes, not actually select the vector features.

Good point, I was thinking time was the only think I needed. Thanks!

comment Is there a way to manually place labels in QGIS?
You can actually use the label property tool on curved labels; the other ones don't work.

comment Converting KML to layer in ArcGIS 10 - nothing happens
Try right-clicking on the layer and choosing "Zoom to extent" (or similar command, I don't remember the exact wording and don't have Arc in front of me now). If you find the data, but offset from where it should be, you may need to set the spatial reference system of your data frame or one of your layers.

comment Does QGIS support MT83F
@SeanL you probably need to set 'Search within' to search for names not IDs in the CRS selection box.

comment Quantum GIS Standalone Installer Windows folder
I think on 32 bit machines, that will be C:\Program Files\... (no x86). I also don't have a handy way to test.

Is there a specific type of data you're looking for (road network, population distribution, &c)?

comment Best software to draw lines on Maps (eg. Neighbourhoods or Streets) and then import it into SqlServer 2008?
@NathanW excellent! It seems like a lot of people are moving towards SQL Server from Oracle.

You may also have success connecting directly to SQL Server from within QGIS - see woostuff.wordpress.com/2011/03/13/… (never done it myself, so can't speak to stability &c). Probably creating a Shapefile and importing is easiest in this situation.

comment Free high-resolution Orthophotography for Quebec
Google Earth and Bing are both mapping applications, tied to their data. What Darren is looking for is a file he can download to use in a GIS.

comment How to union polylines with the same name?
If you use the UNSPLIT_LINES option, ArcGIS won't connect two streets with the same name unless they share an endpoint. I think this is what you want. The only places this might break down are a) if the ends of the lines don't quite meet or b) if the is an intersection where two streets of the same name cross each other.

comment Is it possible to use the Goode Homolosine projection in QGIS?
I should have mentioned a ticket on the Proj.4 tracker for Goode Homolosine support (which was created after that question was asked): trac.osgeo.org/proj/ticket/106. Looks like I don't have as new a proj as I thought, though; I'll try updating my proj and see how it goes. Sorry for the duplicate question.

@MatthewSnape Good point.

comment How would I draw and visualize custom maps based on OSM data?
You can use the OpenLayers plugin (github.com/sourcepole/qgis-openlayers-plugin) in QGIS to pull in OSM tiles.

comment Which data format typically displays fastest in ArcMap?
Of course the speed of the network has a huge effect on SDE drawing speed.

comment Which data format typically displays fastest in ArcMap?
Compressing a File GDB forces ArcMap to decompress the data you are requesting when you draw it. Decompressing takes some CPU. I'm not sure if ArcMap implements caching to prevent repeated decompression, but in case it will need to decompress the data sometimes. In my experience, FGBDs are quite fast, especially when on a fast drive and with indices on any columns that are used in joins or definition queries (although I don't have any comparative data for FGDBs vs. other formats).

comment Create Shapefile with auto increment primary key in QGIS
The only issue is that they seem to change when I edit the data and recalculate; I think the best option is to switch to Spatialite.

comment Create Shapefile with auto increment primary key in QGIS
I believe this is the same as the row number, and is what ArcGIS uses, but I'm not sure.
