comment What is a good resource for learning to hand draw a map?
Real/fictional/fantastical... I'm treating this as a hobby. I may eventually play with GIMP, but I'm currently in a luddite phase & I wanna use pencils... Good 'ol fashioned wooden pencils!

In addition to the great links from J-roc & Fetzer below, I've found a nice simple set of rules for drawing "Hachures" on Wikipedia: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hachure_map

Awesome site... There goes the rest of my day!

comment Polygons from Polylines in either ArcView or FOSS
This seems like the right path... It is with an odd mixture of resignation and anticipation that I download my first copy of GRASS tonight. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction

Thanks Dano - The ET site claims that "Polyline to Polygon" is a free function of the GeoWizard add-on... For that I'll take this as a valid answer, however I'm not going to try it out anytime soon. This is not a paid gig for me (read "I'm in no hurry") and it is high time that I dug into an Open Source solution. I'm gonna try out the GRASS solution as per Maning's suggestion above.

@Dano - No I've never even opened a copy of AutoCAD. I will check out ETGeoWizard after I finish my day job today... Thanks

@Sean - Gee shucks, thanks for allowing me to have the "OpenSource" tag attached to my question

@Sean - Why did you remove the "qGIS" and "OpenSource" tags from my question? The folks who read those questions are the ones who may have the answer I need.

@CDBrown - No ArcEditor for me... At least not for this project.

Are you looking to create something like a pie chart for insertion into a report?

comment Can a “Join” be detected programmatically?
I ended up using a function very similar to this one and it works great... For each layer in my document, I loop through the fields list and use Python to determine whether there is a "dot" in the field name.

comment Can a “Join” be detected programmatically?
This looks promising! I don't understand the meat of what it is doing: "if f.name.find(lyr.datasetName) > -1:" but I will try it in a few days and report back (I'm about to get snowed in & lose power!)... Thanks!

comment Can a “Join” be detected programmatically?
ArcObjects and comtypes aren't going to be the solution for this project, they are foreign to me and this project is due yesterday. Thanks for pointing me to that forum thread! I'm going to try the idea presented there: "...check whether any of the fieldname.split(".) would result in 2 parts of which the first would be the Join table!"

comment Can a “Join” be detected programmatically?
@ Dan S. - I am using insert cursors and such in my code. I have no idea how I would go about making my code insensitive to joins.

comment Can a “Join” be detected programmatically?
@ Nathanus - The manual Remove Join in ArcMap does not break my layer properties, the GP tool does. Here is a relevant quote from ESRI Help: "As these tools perform the actual behind-the-scenes join processing slightly differently than the Join Data dialog box, use the tools if you encounter any unexpected issues with the join functionality on that dialog box."

comment How to automatically set polygons borders to improve map readability when rendering thematic maps?
I've done a similar version of this effect by buffering the interiors of polygons, coloring the buffer the same as the poly but changing the saturation of the buffer color... I did like that solution better that the blurry images shown on the blog post!

Re the second question: Do the edges of the polygons all touch each other to form a continuous surface, or are they distinctly separate polygons like lakes.

Is there a maximum number of possible colors per polygon? Do the polygons form a continuous fabric?

comment How do I build a form within ArcMap?
Your comment made me realize that I left out a key factor in my original description. I'm building the gdb schema and I want the end users to populate it with data... So no, this suggestion won't work for me.
