Packing Polygons within polygon Does it have to be in ArcGIS? Because I think in GIS, you have to code a lot. It will be easier in MATLAB, I think. Good question. I am interested in the answer. |

ERROR 999998: Unexpected Error lol. Thats a good comment. May be the toolbox you are using and you gave a file name for export. Did you assign extension to that file? Your export file name should have desired extension else you get errors. |

How to check if a point is near or inside polygon? Thanks whuber. I know about that algorithm too. But the problem of the floating will still remain there. Parity of the edges in nutshell, checks for intersections, which is in fact check by pairwise cross products of the two vectors. You were right. I had a choice to program once for my class assignments and chose the sum=360 approach. May be some advanced algorithms takes some factors into account. But I think the person looking for answer is happy with java implementation. Cheers and have happy triangles. |

How to check if a point is near or inside polygon? Agreed and a definitely to the point response. I just posted this so that someone might come looking for an answer to the problem, and for the sake of completeness of the page, I though its a good idea to put a general algorithm here. Also, good point about floating points arithmetic, and truly its never 360. But it works reasonable for 360+-(10^-10). Floating errors will always be there, no matter how elegant your solution is. Thanks again for pointing out things that I missed. |

Separation of Land - Body waters As far i remember, friend of mine did a project on Mekong river basin, and the data she used was from USGS. They have a full network of watershed. I will check for the link with her. But may be you can try yourself on USGS (US Geological Survey) website. Though the data might not be as high res as you might need. For example small lakes in counties like Netherlands might cause trouble in terms of accessibility. I am curious myself if you can find some data like this. Will post further once I find something. |
