Unfortunately I encountered a bug: hub.qgis.org/issues/9783 as I wanted to use the values in data defined properties.

Although not what I expected, that's clearly a more elegant solution. I guess sometimes one must be told that 1 + 1 = 2 Thank you Matthias.

Instead of diameter + material (e.g. 300 Stell) I have now an id. The value behind the id shows on account of the value relation widget. The question is how to have this in the expressions. I know how to create a new column and fill it with the actual values but that would be redundant and I want to avoid that. Thank you anyway

comment Can I simplify polygons in QGIS by Size?
A certain size in what storage format? Postgis, Shapefiles etc. I don't know the application of what you're asking but you can approximate this. Simply see what's the size of a polygon with 10 points, or 30, or 100 whatever. If it's x and you want x/2 size simplify your polygons until they have the max no. of points of 5, 15 or 50. This is a simplistic approach. You can devise a more complicated script but you should give more details about the usage.

comment How to remove vertices or lines within a polygon?
It would be easier if you would just post a link to the data (maybe a small portion of it). How did you import it? Normally you should have exported as polygons only the closed polylines (if you exported with autocad map3d or similar)
