comment Extract raster values at points
People are still finding the above-mentioned post through this Q&A. However, the plugin is not the only solution, and not always the easiest solution anymore. An alternative solution is the Saga function ‘Add grid values to point’ in the processing toolbox. See for details this post.

comment How to label a lot of nearby points?
You are right. I was thinking about the default labeling tool, where the coordinates are held within the attribute table of the polygon layer (the plugin 'layer to labeled layer' uses that by writing X and Y coordinates to the polygon layer - but it doesn't offer the very handy option to connect point to label with a line). The good think is that the option to 'show all labels' is in all cases valid

comment Tutorials to handle spatial data in R
Not tutorials as such, but still recommended, in case you haven't checked these out: geodacenter.asu.edu/projects/rsp, cran.r-project.org/web/views/Spatial.html, stat.math.ethz.ch/mailman/listinfo/R-SIG-Geo

comment Exporting vector to kml with ogr2ogr without extended data
It seems that if you use the -select option, you always need to include the columns you are using for "Name" and "Description"? This means these columns are included twice, as part of the Extended Data and as Placemark name and description.

Thanks, that works with ogr2ogr. I am not seeing an option to use this option in GRASS or QGIS.

comment How to merge many individual KML layers into one?
I am not sure I understand, if I have a kml file with multiple lines, that would just open as one layer with multiple lines in QGIS. If on the other hand you have multiple kml files, you can open them all in Google earth, put them in one folder and export the folder as a new kml.

comment What raster-based GIS systems really work?
Very late answer, but did you have a look at sextante (sextante.forge.osor.eu). It includes both SAGA and GRASS modules. And it has been used as a toolbox for ArcGIS.

comment What FOSS GIS has the option to link attribute tables to rasters
For relative small rasters that will work well, but not for very large raster files.

Thanks, ILWIS handles attribute tables for rasters well, good suggestion. In GRASS you can create categories with labels, but I don't think you can create attribute tables

Yes, they are correct, so I assume the server can reach them (but is there a way to make this sure?)
