comment Mosaic many rasters in ArcGIS is slow
It may help to explicitly set a cell size. Otherwise it will need to compute a cell size from the input which may require more processing.

comment What is the most annoying fact about the GIS market/industry?
@Sean. But the shapefile standard exposes a very simple set of objects that most GIS systems will already have an equivalent for. Other standards (such as GML) expose much more complicated objects that are more difficult to support. For example if your format has support for annotations you need to fully implement complex rendering to properly support the format. This makes displaying the data inconstant which is bad for an interchange format. Simple limited formats (like GeoJSON) are just easier to implement.

comment List of Offensive Symbols/ Colours for Cartography
I don't know of a list but it is worth doing a "search by image" on Google if you are worried about a particular symbol. This will show you similar symbols and identify things that may be risky. It is easy to use symbols by accident. For example the cross in a circle symbol has been used by Neo-nazi groups.

comment Multiprocessing issues with ArcPy
Behind the scene ArcGIS may be saving your variables to disk which could cause issues. By explicitly specifying this information you reduce this risk. It may make things slower, but you could re-enable once you know what the problem is.
