@PolyGeo: I have answered this question, but I don't think there is much chance of the OP coming back and accepting the answer after 2 months.

Where exactly are you stuck? On the server component, or the ofline database component? Or at the design stage?

You can use Oracle's tracing & Auditing. Have a look at this question: stackoverflow.com/questions/7914354/oracle-sql-query-logging

comment “GIS” Mapping on Monument - Scaling
If you really want to be accurate, you need to use an Archeological scale while taking a photograph: archaeology-safaris.co.uk/shop_equipment.html

comment Future Climate Variables
Hi! Welcome to GIS.Stackexchange This question is firstly too vague and confusing. It might also be out of scope for this site, unless you can show that you are using GIS (& yes, GIS is often used in Climate models). Unless you Edit and improve your Question, I don't think it can be answered.

+1 for the right perspective needed for evaluating Open source, and not being an OpenSource Zealot!

comment Editor and projections ArcGIS
@OliverBurdekin: What you have done is pretty much the same thing. The Define Projection tool, is just a way of doing that very thing via geoprocessing.

comment Editor and projections ArcGIS
I've often faced this problem when data comes from other software. That software might use the correct parameters for say UTM 43N, but the name is not what ArcGIS expects. And all ArcMap can do, it to throw this Warning.

comment Editor and projections ArcGIS
ArcMap is terribly stupid in this case. It always looks at the name of the projection, not at the actual parameters. I either ignore this error, or use the define projection tool to define the projection of all layers to one projection.

You could also use an XYZ layer: openlayers.org/dev/examples/mapbox.html

Even I'm getting the same result. Looks like this data isn't present in your area of study. :-(
