Not quite. Feature to Polygon fills in any closed geometry with a new polygon. I only want to slice existing polygons. I am currently using this as part of my workaround, though. (See orig question)

revised Automated/geoprocesing tool to slice, clip, or cut polygons using polylines using ArcGIS Desktop?
Added Edit 2- Prefer a solution that "directly" cuts, instead of relying on a mask. Open to a programatic solution.

Re: Smaller pieces by grid: I have. Made a fishnet. A few actually of different sizes. I can't get the split tool to work. I thought about doing a bunch of clips from a larger blocked fishnet, but haven't tried it yet. Will try that now.

comment DBMS and ArcSDE Architecture for Large (Mostly Non-Spatial) Dataset
That is apparently a BIG concept I was missing- I had assumed for no good reason that SDE was needed for a Query Layer. Good to know. Not sure if this should be an edit or comment, but where does a Query Layer stand in terms of performance vs SDE?

comment DBMS and ArcSDE Architecture for Large (Mostly Non-Spatial) Dataset
I have ArcSDE for PostGRES as part of the EDN Package, but not a production license (yet, if needed). Does using Query Layers require going through the SDE service? If not, I suppose that is a way to get around the 32-bit SDE for PostGRES bottleneck...
