comment R SP library: identicalCRS and parameters in different order
Yeah, I'm sure there are. That's (just) one reason it's far from perfect!

To complicate things a bit further, identical CRS's need not even have the same set of arguments. See here for an example, and an (imperfect) function I've used to test for equivalence of PROJ4 strings.

revised AddJoin failing in Python ArcGIS
Fixed names of arcpy commands, giving fully qualified versions and correct cases to names, since arcpy is case-sensitive.

Two questions: (1) Do you actually want to get the line segments that connect the point to the nearest intersection with the contour (or do you really want long line segments that cross the contour); and (2) are you still open to an R-based solution?

comment Which datasets are best used to construct minimal reproducible examples for ArcGIS?
OK. Good to know I haven't been missing something obvious. It's really quite a pity that they haven't taken the time to make those code snippets reproducible. That is the tradition, for example, for all code samples included in help files in my native R language, and it's a super-helpful way to present ... help.

Terrific! Thanks. That TemplateData.gdb is exactly what I was looking for. Regarding the Esri Data and Maps DVD, do you know whether it contains the datasets that get used by the arcpy code snippets that are scattered throughout the ArcGIS Help Library (typically near the bottom of each page)?

comment How to batch generate thumbnails of raster layers with R?
Also, if you want to enforce a certain width or height while keeping the aspect ratio constant, you should be able to do that with a bit of computation using the results of gdalInfo(), as in: "unlist(gdalinfo("SALUMSSAtif.tif", raw_output=FALSE)[c("rows", "columns")])"
