Thanks - I had been trying to achive this by copying features selected in the attributes table, not the feature itself. It seems so obvious now.

Fair point - I've come to Arc from Mapinfo and still use some of the Mapinfo terms. I've edited accordingly. A tool layer is not a script tool though, it is a tool that has been placed on the table of contents and is run each time the mxd is opened.

The shadings are indicating the bathymetry. The points indicate areas where the company has data. I'm not sure about the orange overlay - perhaps just for visual appeal. The target users do not need any more info about the map, they are only interested in the highlighted points and already understand what they mean. I just haven't seen a representation of bathymetry in this way before and thought it looked intersting.

That seems like a good idea, but you'd have to use an image editor to mark the centre of each photo first, otherwise you wouldn't know which point to georeference.
