comment Open Source Challenge: Automated Mastermap update in Oracle Spatial
Do you want to keep using oracle spatial or not (a bit unclear whether storing the data is part of the "open source stack")?

comment Completely Brand New to GIS - Help picking technology from the pros
Mapguide is around as a commercial gis web server since 1996. So certainly older than GeoServer, and the age is certainly not a reason to avoid it.

comment Why is my DEM not caching correctly?
What often works in arcgis is using the raster calculator and calculating a new grid with exactly the same values as the old one. Often raster problems are gone when using the new grid. I suppose it recalculates some statistics and caches.

In fact you can combine both methods (this answer and my/roberts answers): r <- raster('E020N90.DEM') and then run values(r)<-readBin("E020N90.DEM", "integer", size = 2, signed = TRUE, n = nrows(r) * ncols(r), endian = "big") and then values(r)[values(r)==-9999]<-NA

comment Is it possible to create 3D dxf with OGR?
As far as I can tell this will work for contour lines, but not for true 3d-lines, which have a (x,y,z) coordinate for every point, and not one z value for every point of the line
