I have a Bachelor of Science in Applied Geoinformatics, with my main areas of study being Geography and Environmental Studies, GIS, Computer Science and Information Systems. I have always had a passion for computers and geography, so studying and working in the GIS field has given me the best of both worlds.

My questions/answers will be written in South African (UK) English - please do not "correct" my spelling.

comment Geoprocessing service saved data to scratch gdb
Worst case scenario, I'm thinking you will have to to set your overwrite environnment settings to True, and then add a Copy process to the end of the model which will then output your result into the file gdb you choose. It's a workaround I know, but I've had to do something similar before when there just isn't time to figure out why it's not working when you have followed all the steps exactly.

I was hoping you wouldn't have this problem, because we have the same issues but we just assumed it was something we were doing because our server setup is slightly wonky. When publishing the service, does it prompt you that it will copy everything to the server? From my experience sub-folders inside a registered folder are sometimes included, sometimes not :-/

comment Merge adjacent polygons ArcGIS
The Integrate tool is quite useful. I just want to point out that it will modify the input geometry, so making a backup of the original feature class might help.

I have found openpyxl to be very useful as well for reading in and manipulating Excel sheets in conjunction with arcpy.

comment How to read an Excel sheet in ArcPy script
I've found using the format xls=r"E:\123.xls\Sheet1$" to be fairly dodgy - sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't (I've tried it on two copies of the same workbook - it worked for the other one, the script crashed with "does not exist" on the other).

comment Using Value from Iterate Feature Selection to Calculate Field in ArcMap 10.1 ModelBuilder
Value should be set as a precondition to Calculate Value. This ensures that the expression is constructed after the current value is updated, so the connector between Value and Calculate Value should be a dotted line. You can then fill in the Python code.

comment how to remove underscore from filename in directory using modelbuilder
@galindo If you used PolyGeo's string replacement in the Calculate Value tool, then your parsed_filename contains the new shp name without underscores.

@PolyGeo I meant that if the recursive checkbox is ticked, the Collect Values is not necessary because it will iterate over each shapefile anyway, therefore Copy Features will run for each iteration and copy each shp.

I would suggest using Copy Features instead, as the OP would like to copy the shapefiles over to a new folder.

comment Export selected converted geotagged photo points to a new feature class
I was manually selecting the points because visually I had to spread them also evenly across my study area, and I also had to check the photo quality before selecting the point, so I just did a normal export. Afterwards I tried a combo of joining to the attachment table/copying the table over, both of which did not work (wasn't really expecting it to). I will try the Select with a few test points now.

I've added my workaround below, though I would still like to know if there is a better way to do this.
