comment Error message starting gis.m in GRASS
Thanks, Gene. I see no reason to use the older unsupported GUI. I'll just have to figure out how to deal with aspects of the book that are out of date. It is very frustrating to pay $85 for an eBook that is out of date, however.

Thank you! I think you're answered my question, but it'll take me just a little bit to work through what you've provided.

comment Error from ps.map in GRASS. How to fix?
The command "r.info rastermapname" returned the expected information about the raster to the terminal, with no warnings or errors. It did not "bring up the interactive gui." It's not clear to me that it should have, however. Perhaps I misunderstood your previous comment. Should we move this to another forum? I'm content to keep this here, if it's the appropriate place.

comment Data management in GRASS from command line?
For others interested in learning about data management from the command line in grass, look up the documentation on the following commands: g.mapsets, g.mapset, g.list, g.gisenv, r.in.gdal, v.in.ogr.

I'm not entirely sure how best to test that. Could you please suggest a specific command for me to try?

comment Why can't I load more than 12 elevation files into NVIZ?
I don't think that I want to use the color parameter, as I want to visualize the data in the rasters as an animated time-series of elevation models. There is no real DEM involved (unless you count the rasters that I want to visualize as such). Because R=G=B for all pixels in images, it made sense to me to use a single channel.

I goofed; the elevation parameter was not actually used twice (just tried again to be sure). I've corrected that in the post.

I'll check that out, as it might work for me since I'm not interested in the on-screen animation from directly within QGIS, but rather I'm just using it to create the frames that I'll assemble with some other tool like ffmpeg.

I added all the terminal output from startup to the main body of the post.
