comment How to document field properties of attribute in shapefile?
Thanks @mapperz for your suggestion. I don't however see in the metadata where individual comments on each attribute field would go. I was hoping to have a separate field for each attribute to create a data dictionary of sorts....

This seems like a good route...here is a link to the above mentioned reference. spatial-analyst.net/book/system/files/… . It was my understanding however that R works well with ArcGis.

The basis of the prediction is generalized water table configurations between known surface water bodies and the distance to the known surface water bodies is not used for the prediction. The observed points are groundwater levels measured in wells.

comment Creating a constant elevation raster with multiple attributes
- for visualization purposes in ArcScene this could be used.

comment Creating a constant elevation raster with multiple attributes
@ whuber - I have tried the method and it produces a new raster with attributes populated with the value field from each of the two combined rasters (elevation and cover-class). Is it possible now to use this as a DEM specifying that the elevation attribute be used as the z value? Its my understanding that the elevation must be in the value field for this to still work as a DEM.

Thanks @whuber I looked at this method and I does not look like it will preserve the elevation value (in the example 630) for each cell. I'm not sure if what I am asking is even possible with the data structure inherent to raster files.

@whuber sorry for the lack of detail. I am using the data for specific applications such as in arcscene -- to display the data as a horizontal plain. I know I can use offsets but I would prefer not to. By grouped I am referring to a spatial grouping however groups may occur in more than one location ie forest polygons vs roads.
