"If there are buttons, they must be pushed. If there are switches, they must be toggled. I don't know how to use it until I know what can break it." -Me

I work as an odds-and-ends .NET / web developer for a Civil Engineering firm, learning new skills as I go. Got a 2-year CS degree but mostly had a great friend tutor me, and a patient trainer/supervisor who walked me through some of the OTJ pitfalls.

Weapons of choice are C#, SQL, jQuery/JavaScript, and CSS, although I also use various ASP.NET technologies and Python, and have dabled in iOS/Objective-C/SQLite.

@NicklasAvén Good to know - thanks for answering that for me, I've wondered about it for ages but never had time to experiment.

@NicklasAvén As I said, I don't really know whether the types are related (apparently not). I am still curious whether the native geometry operators work with PostGIS though - the list of PostGIS operators appears to define complementary operators without overloading existing ones. I do not have an existing PostGIS installation to experiment with, but would be curious to know whether the native operators do in fact work on PostGIS types, regardless of whether the types are related.

@MikeT Yes, but PostGIS is built on top of the PostgreSQL types. I use these built-in types and functions myself in several applications, and have found that using the built-in types is more convenient than the string parsing approach show here. I'm not familiar enough with the history of PostGIS development to say if/when/how the types defined for each become interoperable.

comment Trouble consuming secure imagery layer within arcgis.com web map
Try hitting Ctrl+F5 after logging back in to bypass cache and send a fresh request to the server. This may cause the security prompt to be displayed again.

comment How to update the Service Definition of a Feature service on ArcGIS Online (AGOL)?
+1 for the warning about burning credits for regenerating tiles when replacing a tiled .sd

comment ArcGIS Server 10.2 URL - case sensitve
Another consideration (although relatively minor) is performance of routing the massive amounts of HTTP requests a system like AGOL receives. If you have to convert every single request to lowercase as part of your routing logic, that starts to add up.

comment How do I export symbology to ArcGIS Online?
Although as an aside, it is possible to use custom symbols on AGOL maps using this approach, though it seems to be limited to URLs (no file uploads).

comment How do I export symbology to ArcGIS Online?
Does this actually upload the symbology or just link to published imagery/services on your own server? I assume that the entire point of "hosted" is that AGOL hosts everything.

comment Is there a way to set a mask(halo) for labels in a python script?
For posterity - hopefully you created a new layer with the same data source, rather than having 2 point files to maintain?
