CanVec is vector data only, 1:50000. I use often use it for course maps. NRCAN offers no high resolution imagery.

Thanks. @Andre pointed me to the answer. Basically such use is not permitted.

Thanks "Using Google Maps via TMS URL's is against their TOS". It is not legal then. Agreed, in populated and "popular" areas of the worlds there are other options but not in even slightly remote locations in Canada - only google earth has partial coverage there.

comment Can't insert AI CS6 files as objects into ArcMap 10.1
Wow. didn't even know that was an option. I figured if they could not figure out excel and word anything more graphically complex would have been out of the question. Did transparencies, shadows and effects came over correctly and rendered correctly when placed over a map and exported? As a workaround you could try saving AI as EMF and adding as graphic. Static and forget effects such as shadows, opacity but 100% transparency works.

comment What is the advantage to using a representation vs a layer file?
If you can create a cartographic effect you want with layer's symbology alone then stick with layers. Representations are, IMHO, a bit of a train wreck. Too much complexity for not enough functionality. Like many late ESRI features it sounds good on paper but, at least for my workflow, it didn't really work in reality.
