I've been in the geospatial industry since 2002. I primarily use ArcGIS, MapInfo, and FME. But I'm interested in learning QGIS, GRASS and other open source GIS software. I'm also in the process of honing my Python skills. My current interest is in PostGIS.

The question you linked to shows an example of the old updatecursor. I think in 10.1, ESRI added a new update cursor in the da module. It's faster and easier to use. resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.2/index.html#//…

comment Select and count street pattern features (morphology) using ArcGIS for Desktop?
Good point @ChrisW. That should be amongst my list of assumptions. There's much missing from the OP's question.

@T_Bacon, as he was just digitising it is unlikely there were any useful attributes so a copy paste should be a suitable option.

You'll have to prep the data a bit before you can get it into the geodatabase. You may need to filter by igds_layer_name (I think that's the one) using a testfilter transformer. You might also need to use a geometryfilter transformer. Once you get the features you need, connect them to your FGDB writer. How much experience with FME do you have?

comment Shapefile data not displaying on MapInfo workspace?
Try saving the shapefile as a MapInfo TAB file and see if the geometry comes through. It is possible for a shapefile to not have any geometry. It's also possible to have corrupt data. How have you loaded the shapefile? File/Open? Or Open Universal Data?

you could use the string .replace method to remove spaces on pageNumbers first so it wouldn't matter if the user had spaces or not. Then your split would just be pageNumbers.split(",").

comment Importing dgn geometry into empty file geodatabase feature class?
Are the features in the DGN on separate layers? Or do they have a unique colouring? How are they defined in the DGN? One thing you'll have to be careful of is DGNs can store multiple types of geometry in one layer, whereas, a fgdb can only store one type of geometry. When you load a DGN file you will get certain format attributes which you can expose such as layer name. These can easily be filtered and directed to feature classes in a FGDB.
