I've been in the geospatial industry since 2002. I primarily use ArcGIS, MapInfo, and FME. But I'm interested in learning QGIS, GRASS and other open source GIS software. I'm also in the process of honing my Python skills.

It is a commercial solution. You didn't specify you were only looking for free solutions. I think FME has a free trial period.

You might also try using QGIS.

Try downloading FME. Create a new workbench and add a Geodatabase Reader and a PostGIS writer.

Are you limited to using ogr2ogr? Or are you open to other solutions? FME should be able to do this easily.

comment How to use FME to parse .txt file to publish content to REST Interface?
I've never used FME Server, so I don't know what's involved in publishing. If you want to extract links from the text files, just use a Tester transformer. FME also has WMS readers which might be better.

What have you tried so far? Where are you getting stuck? Are you just trying to extract the WMS links? You could easily use a Text Reader and filter out lines which match an address or part of an address or some pattern using Regular Expressions.

comment FME - How to write all attributes when multiple source files have the same name?
Thanks Brad, have a look at my edits above. SchemaMapper won't be feasible for me, and I have tried the other options too. Still no joy.

I've also edited my question with additional information which may be relevant.

@MarkIreland, yes, that's essentially what I tried. I have done that several times in the past with no trouble. And to answer your question, the attribute doesn't actually get added to the destination feature classes. I will send my workspace to support.

This solution worked perfectly. Thanks @Ken.

Is your network topologically cleaned? That is, do the nodes and lines touch? Is your network in a geodatabase? In a geometric network? If not, you might benefit from putting it in a geometric network.

That's what I was afraid of. Thanks anyway. I'll look into implementing this solution across the company.

+1 Nice answer, but I don't think this will work for me as others may need to edit a project. Please see the edits to my question.

I thought about that, but in order to fan out by that, I lose the dynamic aspect of the workbench. It also wants me to specify the allowed geometry which I won't know beforehand.

Furthermore, if I rename fme_feature_type, I get an error saying it can't find the schema definition because it's getting the definition from fme_feature_type.

FME automatically appends _point, _line, _polygon or _annotation because a feature class can only support one geometry type. Whereas, a TAB file can support multiple types in one file. But I'm not concerned about that. I'm wondering how to get rid of the () characters in the file name.

The writer is dynamic because I want to read all TABs in a folder and write to a geodatabase. TAB filenames should become the feature class names with "_point", "_line", or "_polygon" appended automatically as appropriate. No fanouts.

This is a good idea, and I ended up modifying it to come up with a solution. Thanks.
