Thanks Brad, this is helpful. Kind of looking for something a little more intuitive though like the AutoCAD Select Similar tool

comment What dem data are Flex Viewers using to create elevation profiles?
arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=58a541efc59545e6b7137f961d7de883 has this dem data. Can this be made to run to run 3D analysis in ArcGIS. Interested in QGIS possibilities too.

Thanks for those helpful links Brad. Not seeing the underlying elevation data source used to query the profile. Do you know where it can be found?

comment Selecting only parallel lines along a center line
I saw your solution (long list of code) in that thread and tried to use it in a few different places. I am somewhat code-challenged so forgive my ignorance. Can you please list the steps to implement your code solution?

comment Is there a way to clip a polygon layer according to DEM elevation?
Have you tried Raster Calculator? docs.qgis.org/2.2/en/docs/user_manual/working_with_raster/… Using a mask If you want to mask out parts of a raster – say, for instance, because you are only interested in elevations above 0 meters – you can use the following expression to create a mask and apply the result to a raster in one step. ("elevation@1" >= 0) * "elevation@1" In other words, for every cell greater than or equal to 0, set its value to 1. Otherwise set it to 0. This creates the mask on the fly.
