Thanks a lot for the reply and on the IRC as well. I would say that it is not all that obvious to a new user. A change of labelling might be helpful.

Amazing! That works really well. Thanks so much! Do you know if I can do the same for cities and towns? Is there another tiger file for that?

Hi vinayan, thanks for your reply. Unfortunately I don't have any road / place name layers. I was using the open layers google streets for that. This is what I have at the moment: i46.tinypic.com/140vvkg.jpg. I tried downloading the OSM data from cloudmade for the whole of georgia state but overlaying that results in much too much detail. I then tried underdark's google style: underdark.wordpress.com/2011/09/16/… but because the map is quite zoomed out that didn't really work either. Do you know where I can get highway layers that are simple?

Thanks! Underdark's solution, at first look, seems more complex but more flexible. A good option.

Right. It seems that just articulating my problem in the question above was enough to get my brain working down the right path. The OpenLayers plugin does exactly what I want. It will allow me to add Google/OSM layers to QGIS. Instructions here: lib.uwaterloo.ca/locations/umd/documents/QGISGuide_Qian.pdf Openlayers Plugin details here: github.com/sourcepole/qgis-openlayers-plugin I hope that helps anyone who is searching the web with a similar problem.
