comment Can I have Points, Lines and Polygon features in one QGIS layer?
Its a pity, because we would like to use it for command and control, where plans are drawn over "base maps", routes, assembly areas, drop zones, etc. is planned on one overlay, a contingency plan can be on another overlay, a perceived enemy plan another. Having one plan on different overlays is going to confuse the user.

comment How to create a new empty vector layer programmatically?
Thank you for the reply, it was certainly helpful. However when using the the script i get the following error. "NameError: name 'QVariant' is not defined" I left the "addAttributes" part out and managed to put a dot on the map, so it works, thank you. I am using Ubuntu 12.04 and QGIS 1.8.0-Lisboa But what can cause the above mentioned error?
