comment ogr2ogr reprojection works on command line but shifts output when same command run from inside python?
No, it replaces them.

Just another thing you missed: It is necessary to add towgs84=0,0,0,0,0,0,0 to projections based on WGS84. proj does the datum shift only if +towgs84 (or +datum or +nadgrids) is given on both sides.

comment Creating counties in QGIS
I would generally agree, but looking at the data, I have the impression that it is after 1890 (despite its name). Compare en.wikipedia.org/wiki/… with the map from visionofbritain.org.uk/maps/#tab01

You may have to switch to Advanced Interface at the bottom of the Processing toolbox.

Can you share the shapefile, or parts of it via dropbox?

@user30184 The proj4 string of sr.org misses +towgs84 parameters. This is from current QGIS: +proj=sterea +lat_0=52.15616055555555 +lon_0=5.38763888888889 +k=0.9999079 +x_0=155000 +y_0=463000 +ellps=bessel +towgs84=565.417,50.3319,465.552,-0.398957,0.343988,-1.8774,4.0725 +units=m +no_defs

There are different values for +towgs84 available. Please check if both methods use the same values.

With EPSG:102739, the extent of your data should be xMin,yMin 2694660.40;9820568.01 : xMax,yMax 3315333.67;10415697.74

If the extent of your layers is in degrees, you will never get feet as units. It looks like you have broken the shapefiles with false assigning of CRS.

You have the .shx and .dbf file also in the same folder? Without them QGIS can not read the shapefile. Can you load the files manually?

Maybe the system does not know if it should open india-latest.shp as a file, or buildings.shp. Try to rename the folder.

comment Import error:No module named _gdal
If you follow the steps from user30184, the script will rum with python 2.3.4. This is shipped with the FWtools, and gets activated with setfw.bat. You have to open a DOS shell and do everything inside it. If it does not help, rename the Python 2.5 folder until you are finished with FWtools. And don't forget the python before the script name.

comment Processing RGB+NIR raster into RBG?
Blocksize and Colorinterp are not the same as your original. Normally, RGB has values between 0 and 255, the max values might be NODATA. You might have to set those values manually in the vrt.See also gis.stackexchange.com/questions/48034/… and lists.osgeo.org/pipermail/gdal-dev/2011-April/028455.html

Is ascii_folder a file or a folder? The python script might expect full filenames here.

@Erica I don't think it is the same problem, the solution given by user 30184 is already done by the asker. I recommend switching to OSGEO4W too.

comment What is an efficient Algorithm to draw a straight line from points?
If the cross section line is North-South with some tolerance, your sorting will fail. You better look at maxX-minX and maxY-minY, and take the axis of the larger extent for sorting.

comment Where can I download the exercise data for The Free Quantum GIS Training Manual?
@Martin Basically you are right, but the asker wanted a download link for the data. If the linked page changes, someone has to update it here too.
