You will not get lucky with old versions of osm2pgsql becausse they can not read 64 bit integer node numbers. Since OSM has hit this line some time ago, every imort with older versions will fail at some stage.

I have not looked into that bug deeper lately, but it seems to me that it happens for points on the backside only. For your example, try both methods and compare the results. The ellipsoid should have more accurate values.

The strange thing for me is when I georeference a jpg in QGIS, the srcY in the GCP table are all negative but in the GDAL commandline they are inverted to positive, giving the right referencing in the end. Seems like a bug if an .asc file is loaded.

You get better results if you use the projection it looks like. This is the Robinson projection: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Robinson_projection_SW.jpg and it looks rather similar.
