That's a very thorough answer Huck. Thanks.

Thank you. Some interesting thoughts there.

Thanks radouxju. This seems to be to appropriate solution. I'm going to do FeatureVerticesToPoints as Roland suggests on the before and after FC, to keep an eye on what really got removed.

Yes, they are collinear within the default tolerance (0.001m). Just like a line where you add a vertex with edge snapping on. Can I remove them? As in am I allowed to? Well yeah, that's the goal.

Yes I do. I have ArcGIS 10. But Maplex doesn't solve the problem. It puts the label where the original geometry is, not where the representation is. In this case it behaves just like the standard labeling engine.

If there is no alternative I'll have to use annotations.

It is but the masked boundary covered only something like 40 tiles. Mosaic to New raster would probably handle it with ease if add those tiles individually. Maybe it's like you say a memory issue of the Copy Raster tool.

No that's not it. It was 2 Mosaic Datasets consisting of 630 and 530 tiles combined into one Mosaic Dataset.
