VERY new to GIS in any format! As a Parish Councillor (volunteer, unpaid position) I have identified a need to be able to add our own layers to Ordnance Survey mapping data. So, here I am trying to get to grips with GIS concepts in general and QGIS specifically.
I consider myself to be computer savvy but have never had to learn complicated software in a field I know so little about. I use forums quite a bit but not in such a techie rich environment so the whole stackexchange environment and forum layout is new to me and a little daunting. I keep thinking that at 58 years of age I shouldn't be doing this to myself :)
Very slowly getting to grips with GIS and the software technology that accompanies it. As I learn more I realise that there are more 'real life' uses that I could put QGIS to. I would like to have a layers for all the Parish street furniture and I particularly want to produce an application that will enable us to log data about our street lights including fault reports, repairs and associated costs etc. Recently realised that I may well have to get to grips with some sort of database product and thinking that PostgreSQL might be the way forward.
The more I learn the more I realise I do not know and the bigger the tasks get :)

How long for surveying quality GPS to get accurate 3D position information Thanks @Mapperz. I wasn't able to get that link into my post from my mobile device at the time. |

How long for surveying quality GPS to get accurate 3D position information Thanks Guys. My mistake was in forgetting what I used to know about GPS and thinking that survey grade kit was somehow magically more accurate; I forgot that the errors are not for the most part in the kit but in the rest of the 'system'. The blog that @Mapperz has managed to post a link to above is the one I was reading. It does state that post processing was required and I understand why now :) |

How to get a QGIS useable style file from OS .xml and .xsl files? Thank you Gene. I was in the process of reading through some of the documentation associated with the xml and xls files but had not come across the reference to the SLD files. I don't know how I missed them on the OS website. I do find that tracking down related documents is sometimes difficult on the OS website. Most of my problem is not having the knowledge to understand much of what I read :( Also thanks to Underdark for her info on SLD Support etc, I'm working through it :) |

QGIS 1.8.0 Mac where is measure window or measure area symbol? John. I've only ever used it to measure area by plotting round an existing polygon. It drags the measured area out as you have probably seen. I don't know if you can use it to just specify an existing polygon to work on and have it give you the area. I suspect there must be a way to do this but I'm afraid I don't know the method. |
