4326 is not a coordinate system that should be used for area, distance, length, or generally any calculation beyond location. Try using a projected coordinate system - preferably one that maintains area - and test this out.

comment What are good tips/habits for a future graduate student in Geo information Science
@mkennedy Hi Melita!!! I bring that up because a friend has a class at DU in the MS GIS program and they're all hung up on making a summary table shapefile using python - so they have to 'make feature layers', etc. etc. and all this extra Arc-Stuff that makes no sense at the python level. So I sat with him and showed him how to use SQL to do the same thing - python would then be a wrapper to automate the execution of that SQL. The lesson here is when spatial education is more open, open data formats and open data processing tools bring more educational opportunities!

Also if you take any classes that are ArcGIS-dominated, ask the professor if you can complete the assignments using open source tools...!!!

comment PostgreSQL trouble editing points / lines / polygons in QGIS
I think so! I can test it out at work and report back, but now knowing how you imported the data, that is your workaround. One issue though - why are you editing this data in QGIS locally instead of editing the data directly in an OSM editor and contributing it back?

@Mathieu I would use the DBManager plugin in QGIS and click the 'primary key' option and name the field OBJECTID or something similar. That should allow you to have editable features... if you have an existing unique ID field you want to use as your primary key, you can always re-set that later...
