comment Comparing size between polygons in different UTM zones
What is your goal? (1) Do you want to examine how the change of a projection changes the area of the same polygon? (2) Or do you already have some polygons which are distributed over Europe. You want to compare the size of the different polygons. E.g. is polygon X (in Spain) greater than polygon Y (in Gemany)?

comment AutoCAD to GIS Standards for Easy Import
Are you aware of AutoCAD Map 3D Industry Models (instead of using DWG files)? You can store your data (geometry and attributes) in several databases (e.g. in Oracle, SQLServer, SQLite).

comment How to convert TIF to ECW with FME maintaining a certain value?
Thanks for your hints @user30184. Due to the projection the content is not rectangular - so clipping will not be easy. I will try this approach: mosaic all TIFFs first (500 files, sum of 1.3 GB). Then convert this one large TIFF to one ECW.

Thanks @user30184. Unfortunately I did not have ER Mapper.

comment Colour coding by day - any conventions?
Thanks for the comments Steve and @alpha-beta-soup. I agree that it is not so clear whether the scale is nominal or ordinal. I assumed that for Steve, there exists a sequence (because he said “follow the rainbow from Monday to Friday”). But it certainly depends on the application/analysis you want to do. If you treat “day” as nominal: your rainbow colors are good. But I would replace gray (Saturday, Sunday) with a color.

comment Using Label classes vs Definition queries - which performs the best?
+1 for your tests. I wonder if it makes a difference whether label conflicts occurs or not? Perhaps you can enlarge the font size so that a lot of lables will overlap. Then disable place overlapping labels option. Is there a difference now?

comment Pie Chart Slice Sizing in ArcGIS-Desktop
You showed an example of how ArcMap displays the chart (field 1: 80,000; field 2: 70,000). Please add a second image how you want the Pie Chart to look.

comment Cumulative field calculation using Python in ArcGIS for Desktop?
What is your real goal you want to achieve? E.g. for NEAR_FID = 1 do you need the results 2, 5 and 7 ? Or it is sufficient if you only get the final result 11?

@RyanDalton - Thanks for the interesting link. But unfortunately my question remains still open (see edited question)

comment Why is using Bing Maps with QGIS free but not with ArcGIS?
Thanks for the information. "You need to license Bing Maps”. Who is you? The user of the plugin (= I) or the provider/programmer of the plugin?

comment Thermal Map Data
In addition to comment of Chris W (low spatial resolution of satellite images) I would like to add: In the company where I worked we always used a cutom airbore thermal scanner data collection to determine the time of the data acquisition. In our urban climate studies we were interested in two times to analyze heat flow: one flyover shortly before the sunrise and another flyover shortly before the sunset. This is not possible with satellite data.

comment How to switch off symbol when label is unplaced due to conflicts?
Since you are looking for a dynamic solution (work when zooming) I would try this: do not display the circles as symbols of a feature. Use the label engine to display the circles as a label. Your label is composed of two parts: the circle and the text.

comment How to place labels under a vector layer?
Is the text “Erlenring” a label of the red/blue line layer? Or does the label “Erlenring” belongs to a second layer (e.g. to the white street polygon)?

comment Eye-friendly colours for long periods of work
+1 for your recommendation of a light background (light grey, light colors) and the interesting links at UX. If you have a paper draft I would not recommend a dark background (your eyes then have to switch between light paper and dark screen while digitizing).
