Sep 11, 2014 at 22:10 comment added WhiteboxDev @whuber, Interesting, I never realized that LISA didn't follow the same [-1,1] range. Do you have a reference? I can't seem to find anything on that. I couldn't find anything in O'Sullivan and Unwin, which is usually my go-to place for this stuff.
Sep 11, 2014 at 20:34 comment added whuber (1) Wouldn't this plot show local Moran's I? That is not limited to the [-1,1] interval. (2) Variograms are needed for geological applications where the random field is not actually stationary (but is only "intrinsic"): for such data, covariograms (and therefore correlograms) do not exist. Since almost all kriging software originally was written for geology, the variogram became a de facto standard.
