@Vince I used the sdetable -o create_view approach since that's what I've been told by everyone here. Is your suggestion one of those tips / best practices you pick up by working with Arc* and being bitten a few times?

Please don't use sdetable -o create_view to create spatial views on tables with native or SDE.ST_GEOMETRY geometry columns. Instead use SQL tools to create the view and sdelayer -o register to register them. If you need to change the view, you should drop it with sdetable -o delete first to avoid corrupting the geodatabase's metadata, then use SQL and re-register.
