merge Merging selected features in qgisQGIS: some "borders" remain

i'mI'm trying to understand (and solve) the following issue in qgisQGIS (2.16.3): iI have a shapefile with hexagons which iI want to merge. doingDoing so works, but certain "borders" (not sure about the correct term, sorry) inside the polygon remain, and iI cannot figure out how to remove them (see below).
