Jul 22, 2018 at 15:29 comment added WhiteboxDev You can get these small squares (i.e. 3x3 boxes of very high, nearly 90-degree, slope) surrounding outliers in the DEM. Outliers are single grid cells that are either significantly above or below the surface. This is very common in LiDAR data, if that happens to be what you are using. They should be removed from the DEM prior to calculating slope.
