Jan 17, 2011 at 18:38 | comment | added | colemanm | Thanks for all the feedback on my situation. My tentative plan is to build a platform around Postgres/PostGIS, so I'll start by going this route to see how it works out.
Jan 15, 2011 at 23:30 | comment | added | RyanKDalton | Correct, from what I hear it is view only. However, there is an ArcGIS extension called "zigGIS" (currently for fee but going open-source) that supposedly will allow direct editing of PostGIS (non-ArcSDE) features via ArcMap. I haven't used it but heard good reviews. obtusesoft.com
Jan 15, 2011 at 21:57 | comment | added | Nicklas Avén | thanks a lot Dalton. that was really interesting info. then maybe arcmap could be usable. it will be like a database view. but I guess there will be no way to edit any data from arcmap.

Jan 15, 2011 at 20:48 | comment | added | Jay Cummins | I've done similar work to this with ESRI Sde featureclasses and SQL Server 2008 (w/ native geometry)--I created the featureclass first, then load with a series of insert statements. IIRC, I had to export the featureclass at the end to a new featureclass because I couldn't generate new objectids correctly. once i did that, business as usual.
Jan 15, 2011 at 20:09 | comment | added | underdark | @Brad: colemanm didn't mention ESRI, so the answer seems to be good.
Jan 15, 2011 at 18:57 | comment | added | Nicklas Avén | @Brad Hmm, I wonder if that is an argument aginst doing things in a transparent reproducable and fast way or an argument against getting locked up by putting sde in between me and my data...;-)
Jan 15, 2011 at 18:02 | comment | added | Brad Nesom | not a good recommendation for ESRI based GIS. Open source "only" this would be acceptable. ESRI has many more dependencies that would not be accessible through this method. direct connect to postgis is not allowed without either an interop, gis server, or arcsde.
