I am not sure if the terminology is correct here so apologies in advance. I am working towards creating REST map services for a map view and part of this work includes developing map services on behalf of other organisations. Our own services expose data that is held within an external Oracle system.

If we can't hold data on an Oracle system would it be possible to develop a REST map service from an external web service that holds up to date data that we don't have to take responsiblity for maintaining? How would this work, or could it work?? Thanks in advance.

The question seems confusing to me. I don't think you can build a REST service from an existing REST service but you can certainly build webmaps from existing services. Your maps can use local and external services together. – jbchurchill Oct 6 '14 at 12:31
  • The eorganisation holds data that we are not going to host ourselves. So the plan would be to ask them to make it available in a format that we could then develop a REST map service from - I wondered if there is a way of doing this so that the data they make available would be maintained by them but the map service would be develped by us? I hope this is a bit clearer at least?? – user2932466 Oct 6 '14 at 12:53
