I was wondering if there are some online examples/instructions for importing NetCDF files into PostGIS raster images?

I looked around, and found this related GIS SE question. However, the answer only points to a geoserver netcdf plugin, and no further info. I was wondering if anyone know of more up-to-date info or a complete example? If direct import to PostGIS is not supported, are there reliable ways to convert to GeoTIFF first?

  • Is the problem you are having the import per se or different aspects of that import's interpretation? There's no end to the problems you can get when NetCDF meets GIS, the file spec is just so open it can completely depend on specifics for individual cases. So conversion to GeoTIFF simply puts the issue one step away without solving it. – mdsumner Nov 2 '14 at 6:23
  • And so for your question, the details matter! Please post a ncdump or gdalinfo (or equivalent) description of the file or variable within a file you wish to import. – mdsumner Nov 2 '14 at 6:28
  • @mdsumner Thanks for the explanation. I guess that's probably why I couldn't find a good instruction for netCDF => GIS. I am primarily working with climate data which has temperature etc by different time points. I will still looking for different data sources. – tinlyx Nov 2 '14 at 6:41
