I have implemented a new web map application in my organization and I want to do a survey/questionnaire for the web map users (both internal and external users) to collect information about what they think about the web map and if they have feedback about it. I will be thankful if you could provide me with tips/suggestions on the type of questions that I should ask in my questionnaire. Has anyone done a similar survey before about their GIS systems?

Many good questions generate some degree of opinion based on expert experience, but answers to this question will tend to be almost entirely based on opinions, rather than facts, references, or specific expertise. If this question can be reworded to fit the rules in the help center, please edit the question.

  • What is the goal of the survey? Do you want to do technical fixes, justify the project (money spent, or future investment), determine future direction, or something else? – BradHards Nov 20 '14 at 10:14
  • @BradHards: I want to spread the word by pushing the survey to all the users who are used to work with the old web mapping application. I want them to know if they are satisfied with the current setup of the web map (themes, colors, styles, search functions, etc) and I want them to state their request to add new features, if applicable. Does that make sense? – Peter Nov 20 '14 at 10:25

I'm sure that by now @Peter has found his solution, but I will place an answer of how I would go about this for anyone else that may search this question.

I think that it is important to keep the survey quick. After 2 minutes you are likely to have lost the attention of your customer. The below questions would help to gauge your customers needs which may point to your work well done, training needs, missing data, or design issues.

Questions I would want to have answered:

  • What was your main reason for using this web map (open answer)
  • Were you able to find the desired information (yes/no)

    If yes

    • How long did it take you to find the information? (quick-first couple of clicks / expected time / too long-many clicks required)
    • Was the information displayed adequately? (yes/no) If No please explain. For example: Storm water pipes can not be seen over the parks as the symbols are the same green. (open answer)
  • What information did you expect to see but could not find? (open answer)

  • Please select all the tools that you used today. (legend, layer
list, measure, near me, my location, query, draw, summary, swipe

  • Any additional comments? (open answer)

Displaying of Survey
See below images

  • Create survey using your usual survey software (enterprise, survey monkey ...)

  • Add the survey URL link to your map through the Attribute Tab.

  • Create a Splash page in the Widget Tab that informs and encourages users to use the survey after their visit. You could also add the link to this page.
