I've been having a lot of trouble getting the Multidimension system toolbox to work in ArcGIS (10.3). In particular, the Make NetCDF Raster Layer tool does not pick up on numerical Latitude and Longitude fields, meaning that the tool cannot correctly display my raster.

The sample data I am testing with can be downloaded here, although I've had the same issue with other NetCDF datasets. (There are plenty listed here.)

I have no problems loading this or other datasets with NASA's Panoply, suggesting the issue is entirely with the tool I'm trying to execute, not the dataset. Below, you can see the variables listed, which include longitude and latitude, with type 2D. How can latitude and longitude values have two dimensions on their own?

This still works, as it has worked for every .nc dataset I've tried in Panoply.

However in the Make NetCDF Raster Layer tool in ArcGIS, longitude and latitude cannot be selected for the X Dimension or Y Dimension. Inappropriately, one (and only one) of these fields can be used as the Variable value. I couldn't get a screenshot with the drop-down showing, but latitude and longitude cannot be specified for the dimension fields. In practice this means that although other values can be chosen for X and Y, none of them give a true geographic representation. That is, the tool cannot actually show me the spatial representation of the NetCDF dataset.

Is there an issue with the Make NetCDF Raster Layer in ArcGIS 10.3? An issue with the dataset? An issue with my workflow? How can I display this dataset in ArcGIS?

EDIT: I have been successful using this tool in ArcGIS with a different NetCDF dataset, for a dataset that Panoply identified the latitude and longitude values as 1D type, rather than 2D type. So I suspect that is the problem. However I am still at a loss as to:

  • How Panoply seems to get by with the dataset while ArcGIS does not; and
  • How I can convert this and other datasets where the type of latitude and longitude is (apparently incorrectly) given as two-dimensional, so that ArcGIS can use them.

Replying late, but this just showed up in my Twitter feed today for some reason...

You ask "How can latitude and longitude values have two dimensions on their own?"

What's going on is that the data are on what may be called an auxiliary lon-lat grid rather than a neat Cartesian lon-lat grid.

If you bring up the info panel in the Panoply sources window and click on the "data" variable, you will see that it does not have dimensions named "longitude" and "latitude". Instead it probably has dimensions "xtrack" and "ytrack" or something similarly bland. It will also have an attributes "coordinates" with string value "latitude longitude".

Now click on either of the longitude or latitude variables, and you will see that they also have dimensions "xtrack" and "ytrack" matching the two dimensions on the "data" variable.

Panoply is detecting how the data are gridded using that coordinates attribute to find the gridding scheme, and then pulling out the auxiliary lon-lat grid from the values in the longitude and latitude variables.

This sort of auxiliary gridding scheme is extremely common with satellite swath data. It is also fairly widely used for oceanographic data in which the grid lines are warped to fit the shape of an ocean or sea basin.

In the Make NetCDF Raster Layer documentation for ArcGIS 10.3 it says "To create a netCDF raster layer from a netCDF variable, the spacing between x-coordinates must be equal and the spacing between y-coordinates must be equal. If the coordinates are unequally spaced, create a netCDF feature layer, then interpolate to raster."

If your longitude and latitude arrays were evenly spaced, they would be 1D. Since they are 2D, they must be unevenly spaced, and will not work as a raster.

So you could try the suggested solution of creating a netCDF feature layer instead.

  • I don't understand how an irregular vs regular arrangement of latitude or longitude values can change the dimensions. Surely an array (1 2 3 4 5) is just as one-dimensional as an array (1 2 4 5). But I'll try this soon and let you know. – Richard Law Apr 23 '15 at 20:21
