I see there were plugins in the past that may have done this such as qgis2kml and qgis2google, but they no longer exist.

You can use the MMQGIS plugin. (http://michaelminn.com/linux/mmqgis/). In the Menu "Import/Export". select the option "Google Maps KML Export". It works for me. You need to keep in mind that if you are converting a polygon with a lot of vertex, Google Earth will not be able to visualize it properly.

This process has worked for me for a few months but now, all of a sudden, it doesn't export the shapefile style anymore. Any ideas as to what's wrong? Commented Jan 17, 2018 at 16:56

The latest version 2.18.15 and the latest version of MMQGIS! Commented Jan 22, 2018 at 20:41
Once you have loaded your shape file in qgis, right click on it in the legend, select save as, then select 'Keyhole markup language' as your format, spatial ref. sys. Must be set to epsg 4326. Then select a file path, where the kml will be saved. A little under this, theres an option export symbology. You should select the option 'export feature symbology'. Also one good thing to do is (also in this dialog), clamping features to ground, otherwise you might see your polygons/polylines partially dissappear when you zoom in/out in google earth for example.

I've actually tried feature symbology export, but for some reason polygons, points and/or lines still have no styling when I open in GE. Just black lines, no fill, and points show up as pins. Commented Jun 17, 2015 at 20:51

Ya, exporting symbol layer symbology doesn't work for me either unfortunately... Does the scale matter? Commented Jun 18, 2015 at 0:26

3Update: This answer appears to work for lines, but not points or polygons for some reason... Commented Jun 25, 2015 at 19:25
