In the "Data and Maps" data that is included with ArcGIS Desktop, the zip code points file, 'zip_usa' (or for example, the layers referenced here: http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=1eeaf4bb41314febb990e2e96f7178df ) used to have a field called "ENC_ZIP".

For point zip codes (such as P.O. Boxes or single buildings that have their own zip code), this told you what zip code the point zip could be found inside.

When I look at current versions of this data, that field has been removed.

Does anyone know where this data went? Is there any other good source for this information?

Your best bet would probably be to contact the D&M team directly. – Paul Nov 5 '15 at 4:14
  • "Delivery has failed to these recipients or groups: data_and_maps@esri.com" (response after filling in their contact form) Well...so much for that. I'll try reaching out to our billing/sales contact and see if they can solve this. – orh Nov 5 '15 at 19:42
  • As it stands I think your question is too broad because you are both asking "what happened to the data?" (asking the people who provide it seems like the best answer), and "is there an alternative source?". I think it is the second of these questions that you should edit your question to focus on. – PolyGeo Nov 8 '15 at 22:37
