Have you ever looked at all the data provided by the European Union and its member states?

Such as eurostat or inspire geoportal?

Within eurostat you will find a page on population density which will help you in your quest...but you will likely have to do some manipulation bringing together several products to create what you are looking for. Like download the admin areas dataset then append the population data to that dataset

Hi, I checked several resources assuming there is a ready to go dataset, so I thought I must have overseen some GIS resource. I will do that manipulation as you suggest. Thanks! – Alfred Nov 27 '15 at 9:52
  • No worries...let us know if you were successful :-) – spk578 Nov 27 '15 at 10:20

You can find a fine grained dataset on the European Environment Agency website : http://www.eea.europa.eu/data-and-maps/data/population-density-disaggregated-with-corine-land-cover-2000-2

It combines population data per commune with CORINE Land Cover to get a 1 ha resolution grid.

  • For my analysis this is even better dataset. Thanks! – Alfred Nov 30 '15 at 9:25
  • Is there anything newer than this? The PDF says that most of the population data comes from 2001 (some 2006), and the landcover data is 2000. That's...really old. :) – Steve Bennett Jul 5 at 0:41
