I am a novice and trying to get monthly precipitation data of India in raster format month wise.

The closest I got was from worldclim.org that too annual data for a block containing the Indian subcontinent (http://worldclim.org/current )and http://www.worldclim.org/tiles.php)This is the pic

But the problem is to get monthly wise data.

Another question is that this page (http://worldclim.org/current ) indicates that data is from 1960-1990 but whenever I download any one variable like min temperature ( tmin )(http://biogeo.ucdavis.edu/data/climate/worldclim/1_4/grid/cur/tmin_10m_bil.zip) all I get is are 12 tmin files ....tmin1 to tmin12 so what are these files indicating and where is the data from 1960-1990 ?

Can anyone shed some light here?

  • 1 to 12 means months, Don't you think and they show 31 years average. – FelixIP Nov 29 '17 at 3:20
  • So that means monthly average data for 31 years? – Shaurya Nov 29 '17 at 3:21
  • @FelixIP could you suggest any way to download dataset after 1990? – Shaurya Nov 29 '17 at 3:22
  • I found this after searching google for around 2 minutes: data.gov.in/catalog/rainfall-india – jbalk Nov 29 '17 at 6:34
  • There's a difference between climate and weather. If you look for weather data on a climate site, you're likely to be disappointed. – Vince Nov 29 '17 at 13:13

WorldClim data is averaged climate data typically over a time period of 30 years. What you're looking for is monthly weather data for India. I'm not too familiar with the availability of data in India but here are a few after a cursory google search:

Global Historical Climatology Network - (GHCN)

GIS Mapping interface to retrieve data: Monthly Summaries Map NCEI
