I use data driven pages to export pdf files in Japanese, and in the PDF all I get is squares and some "" characters instead.

The Japanese displays perfectly fine in ArcMap

But in the PDF it shows squares instead, or when I'm using dynamic text, just "" characters.

I can see that the encoding is wrong. it needs to be UTF-8, but I found no way of achieving that with Google searching.

Checking "Convert marker symbols to polygons" doesn't help nor embedding the fonts.

Any suggestions?

  • There is a quirky workaround I used eventually. you can add dynamic text tags to the dynamic text boxes as well as to the attribute table cells in order to change the font in specific words/characters. Use <FNT name="FontName">text</FNT>. You can see all of the available tags here: desktop.arcgis.com/en/arcmap/10.3/map/working-with-text/… – Yardood Jul 3 '18 at 12:54
