One of the students in my lab is currently seeking methods for measuring the very small size of urban green spaces in people's gardens.

Is there a data set out there that may be appropriate for this?

I tried NLCD 2011 but its too coarse for her needs.

Check out the Digital Globe Foundation application process. They have high-resolution satellite imagery available low-cost or free for academic research purposes, but note that the student will need to perform orthorectification etc. as they don't offer higher-level products as part of this program.
