I'm trying to split a polygon shapefile into separate shapefiles based on attribute values within an ArcPy workflow. I use the following:

inData = "saltmarsh_extent.shp"
inTemp = "G:\tmp"

When I run this code, I get a 'Table' output. But when I use the GUI (ArcMap) to perform this task, the output is in .shp (which is what I want).

Why is this, and how to I allow arcpy.SplitByAttributes_analysis to export to .shp format?

I have seen Split by Attributes creates no Shapefiles, but the workaround is tedious, and much slower than when run in ArcMap. Does anyone have any suggestions for an easy way to output 'Split by Attributes' in .shp in an ArcPy workflow?

  • In ArcMap what are you supplying to each parameter of the tool dialog? – PolyGeo Aug 2 '18 at 22:15
