I have geo-referenced imagery with a size of around 7GB. When I apply GDAL Leaflet compression on the imagery, the size is reduced to 400MB. I have to generate tiles from this geo-referenced imagery. Generating tiles for both uncompressed and compressed version give me same size. So, I want to know how I can reduce the size of image, as in my case the size is still 7GB, because in properties it does show me an uncompressed size. One tile rendered in the browser give me a size of about 100KB, that's really not useful, because loading one single tile of 100KB for lower bandwidth connection is not useful.

How can I reduce the size of the image, so that the tiling size can be reduced and it can effectively serve the functionality.

I am using TileStache for generating my tiles and then display as ZXY Tile Service in Leaflet.

  • You must set the compression on TileStache side but I am not familiar with the program and don't know how. Anyway, TileStache reads input files and creates brand new output files with its own settings. Format of the source file does not make difference because TileStache does not split the compressed source files somehow directly into compressed tiles as you seem to suppose. – user30184 Nov 8 at 14:11
  • The parameters to play with are png options or jpeg options tilestache.org/doc. If you have satellite images create jpeg tiles, for topomaps create png tiles. BTW. what do you mean by "GDAL Leaflet compression"? – user30184 Nov 8 at 15:24
