I have managed to set up an OSM tile server (Ubuntu 18.04), by using this docker image: https://hub.docker.com/r/overv/openstreetmap-tile-server/

Everything works fine while generating tiles with standard, openstreetmap - carto style, but I need those tiles to be rendered with my own style.

Due to limited access to the host machine, I have installed postgres + postgis database on my local computer, and populated it with some OSM data (using osm2pgsql and osm.pbf file from http://download.geofabrik.de). Then, I used TileMill to create my own style, based on data stored in my local db.

Now, to make it work on tile server, I have done following steps:

  1. Generated "mapnik.xml" file (with TileMill);

  2. Replaced db connection parameters to make an XML point to the data on server (and not on my local machine);

  3. Replaced mapnik.xml on server (/home/renderer/src/openstreetmap-carto/);
  4. Cleared tile cache folder (specified in renderd.conf file)
  5. Restarted apache server;

Unfortunately, server still generates tile using standard, OSM style. As I read this topic: Styling OSM data with OSM-Carto , it should work fine after XML replacement. OSM data on server db should have the same structure, since it comes from the same source (geofabrik), and has been uploaded using osm2pgsql. So my questions are:

  1. How to properly replace XML file, to make server actually use it to render tiles?

  2. Is there any easier approach to customize opensteetmap - carto style, since modifying connection params etc. after every change to style is a bit incovenient?
