I am using ArcGIS Desktop.

We are looking at the movements of organisms daily as a result of temperature changes. We have a layer that displays surface temperature values daily for several years. We also have a layer of the many individuals’ movements over time (points from different individuals that span many months).

How do we add the temperature value for that day (the day the satellite picked up the location) in that location to the attribute table of the organisms?

  • in QGIS I would use the field calculator with an expression like attribute(get_feature('temperature_layer', 'date', attribute($currentfeature, 'date')),'temperature'), which retrieves the 'temperature' value for the feature from the temperature layer which has the same date as the current feature of the organism layer. In Arc I believe you can do something similar with a query. – csk Jan 24 at 19:36
